About this Course

 

PassRite's Commercial Driving Instructor Course 

  • This course is suitable for candidates who aspire to become Driving Instructors for: Car Instruction, Heavy-Vehicle Instruction and Motor-cycle instruction.

 

To be Accepted onto PassRite's Driving Instructor Course you will need to meet the following Criteria:

  • You must have held a full class 1 New Zealand drivers licence for at least 2 years.
  • Obtain a Driver Licencing Medical (DL9 Form) - Provided by your Doctor (exempt if you have lodge a driver licencing medical with NZTA / Waka Kotahi within the last 5 years) : These only have a validation of 60days from the date you got it from your doctor till handing it in. (this is a doctor cost that is not included in the course fees and can range between $80 - $100 dependant on the doctors practice you go to)
  • Be competent in driving a Manual Gearbox (all driving activities are completed using manual vehicles)
  • Complete PassRite Manual Pre-Drive Assessment to the required standard (standard will be discussed prior to commencement of the drive) 
  • Have a high level of confidence in driving in all situations and conditions (residential, industrial, rural, town and motorway, heavy-traffic, moderate-traffic, rain, fog or shine)
  • Be committed to engaging in a minimum of 80hours of learning for the course
  • Be committed to complete additional hours of study at home and complete the set homework tasks each night
  • Complete and Submit your application form (DL20B) and Pass Fit & Proper Check - Through an NZTA / Waka Kotahi Agency (AA or VTNZ) ; By submitting this your fit and proper check will begin (can take up to 12 weeks)
  • Book in to sit your Full Licence Test Drive with a testing officer - Through VTNZ (expemt if you have completed the full licence test drive in the last 5 years through AA or VTNZ)
  • In order to participate in the course, you must be able to read, write, and converse in English, as the course is conducted in both written and practical formats.

 

Additional steps Candidates aspiring to become Heavy-vehicle & Motorcycle must do:

  • Heavy vehicle and motorbike evidence to be submitted to NZTA directly upon request. These don’t go to AA or VTNZ. For heavy vehicles it's relevant industry experience within last 5 years, C.V and your last 2 logbooks, for motorbikes it’s a riding resume and list of bike experience

What can I teach?

If you provide instruction, on a road, in a motor vehicle for financial or commercial gain you need an I endorsement for that class of vehicle you intend to instruct in.

Course Entry Requirements

  1. You must have held a full class 1 New Zealand drivers licence for at least 2 years.

Course Outline

The PassRite Driving Instructor Training Programme comprises three key components: 

  1. Classroom based theory training and assessment.
  2. Demonstrations of practical in-vehicle driver coaching techniques. 
  3. The practical assessment of coaching and assessment skills.
  4. 100 Question Roadcode Tests (must get all 100 questions correct, completed in one sitting, incorrect answer will require resitting of another 100 questions)

The combination of both classroom-based training with practical in-vehicle tuition ensures that programme participants receive the most comprehensive training available.

The use of the practical tuition to reinforce techniques and ideas learnt in the classroom further builds and enhances the skills required to be a professional driver trainer

Driving Instructor Course
To become a driving instructor you will need to do the following You must have held a full NZ drivers licence for at least 2 years. Complete and hand in the application form (DL20) to an NZTA authorised office (A.A, VTNZ or VINZ). Bring with your valid I.D (driver licence or passport) Produce a transport medical (if you haven’t done one in the last 5 years) on application and pass the eyesight test or have your eyes tested by an optometrist (ask for driver licence test, they will have the form required) DL9 Medical form your doctor will have. Medical can be no older than 60 days from when you got it from your doctor till handing it in. (About $80) Pay the fees applicable. Recommend paying for 1 year initially. 1 year $134.00 5 year $354.70 Sit and pass a full class 1 driving test ($109.50) with a testing officer unless you have done one in the last 5 years. Book this when handing in application. Pass the Fit and Proper person check. (This starts when you hand in your application form, automatically gets under way. Can take up to 12 weeks to complete). NZTA will look at your driving record and any offences, the Police will look into any criminal history. If you have spent more than 12 months in another country you will need to contact that Police station and get a report from them as well. This can increase the process time past 12 weeks. If you are looking at teaching heavy vehicle classes. Submit your C.V with all relevant experience at time of application. We do suggest you do the above prior to commencing the course to help speed up the process. Complete the approved course covering unit standards 16646, 16647, 14511,14521,14523,20179,20180,3466. The course will be conducted in a manual Vehicle. You MUST be able to drive a manual vehicle competently prior to commencing the course. If you cannot drive a manual and still want to be an instructor we can organise manual lessons to bring you up to the standard required.

3-6 WORKING DAYS prior to course start date:  50% Cancellation Fee / REFUND if pre-paid

2 WORKING DAYS prior to course start date: 100% Cancellation Fee / NO REFUND if pre-paid

PRACTICAL TRAINING CANCELLATION/RESCHEDULING POLICY: 

Less than 24 hour notice results in a fee of $195.00 plus GST per cancelled/rescheduled drive.
